Does Ayurveda helps in weight gain ?

Losing weight is tedious task but so is gaining weight.

Many people find it difficult to gain weight because of their hyperactive metabolic body type, where body burns more calories while at rest.

Exercise and taking more calories than burning them is simple math for weight gain ,

But Avyurveda also offers treatment for weight gain.

Below average body weight has several health issues like low strength and stamina, low tolerance to cold and weak immunity.

1 Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera)

Dr Bhagwati says that ashwagandha helps in building muscle and improving appetite. This supports weight gain in skinny fat people. “Ashwagandha helps in converting fats into muscle. It is a Rasayan (tonic) herb with immense weight gain benefits,” she says.

2 Shatavari (Asparagus Racemosus)

Traditionally used for its many gynaecological benefits, shatavari also helps in weight gain. “This herb is an appetite enhancer. It helps in calming anxiety and reduces fatigue and nervous tension, apart from aiding weight gain,” says Dr Bhagwati.

3 Saunf or Fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare)

Saunf is consumed as a mouth freshener after meals but it also has appetite enhancing properties. “It’s also effective against anorexia, a problem directly linked to weight loss, by increasing hunger in the patients,” says the doctor.

4 Vidarikand (PeurariaTuberosa)

This nutrient-rich herb is loaded with vitamins, minerals and other micronutrients, which help in nourishing the body. “It imparts strength and stamina in people who are low in body weight,” the doctor adds.

5 Safed Musli (Chlorophytum Borivilianum)

Safed musli is an Ayurvedic immune strengthener. According to Dr Bhagwati, it helps in recovering strength and reducing weakness. “It also strengthens the muscles, which enhances the body’s endurance. It’s also a natural remedy of stress and depression, which kills the appetite. This way it helps in weight gain,” says Dr Bhagwati.

6 Pippali (Piper Longum)

Also known as long pepper, pippali has a sharper and more intense flavour than regular pepper. “This wonderful herb has the power to increase your Basic Metabolic Rate, which improves appetite,” says Dr Bhagwati.

7 Jeera (Curminum Cyminum)

Jeera or cumin seeds are used extensively in Indian cooking. Apart from imparting flavour, cumin seeds also have therapeutic uses. Dr Bhagwati says, “Jeera helps in boosting immunity, improving digestion and enhancing the appetite.”

8 Custard Apple ( Annonna Squamosa )

According to Dr Bhagwati, certain fruits also help in weight gain and the most efficient one for the job is custard apple or sitaphal.
